Travel Advice for Italy
Italy is a member of the European Union (EU) and part of the Schengen Convention; therefore, the same conditions apply in Italy as in other EU member states.
In this article, you'll find information on the necessary documentation to travel to Rome and other parts of Italy.
EU Citizens
Italy has been part of the European Union since 1958. Therefore citizens of countries belonging to the Schengen Zone may visit Rome with just a passport or valid ID.
US & UK Citizens
American citizens and citizens of the United Kingdom travelling to Italy for less than 90 days do not need a visa. However, they will need a valid passport for at least 6 months beyond their stay. Immigration officers may also ask citizens to show enough funds for their stay and a return airline ticket.
Australian and New Zealand citizens
Australian citizens planning on staying in Italy or any other EU member country for less than 90 days are not required a visa. However, your passport has to have at least 6 months of validity from your planned date of return.
New Zealanders do not require a visa to enter Italy and can spend up to 3 months in the country. However, they will need a return ticket and a passport with at least 3 months of validity from their planned departure date. Currently, New Zealand has bilateral visa waiver agreements with certain countries in the Schengen area including Italy, which you might want to check out before travelling: Safetravel.govt.nz
EU, EEA and Swiss Citizens
As citizens of the European Union and European Economic Area, you will not need a visa to enter the country.
Germany, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Denmark, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Estonia, Finland, France, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Iceland, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Sweden, Poland, Portugal, Norway, Liechtenstein, Czech Republic and Romania.
Citizens of countries That Don't Require a Visa
The following states do not need a visa for stays up to 90 days, but require a valid passport to enter Italy:
Andorra, Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Brunei, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Croatia, Colombia, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Hong Kong, Israel, Japan, Macao, Malaysia, Mexico, Monaco, New Zealand, Nicaragua, Panama, Peru, Paraguay, South Korea, San Marino, Switzerland, Singapore, United States, Uruguay, Vatican City and Venezuela.
Citizens of States That Require a Visa
The best option for citizens of other countries not mentioned above is to go to the Italian Embassy in your country or check the website of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
