San Sebastian Catacombs Tour
Tour Details
At the indicated time, we'll meet at Appia Antica Caffè to begin this guided tour of the catacombs of San Sebastian. Before entering the city's underground, we'll walk for about an hour along the famous Via Appia, ready to discover some of the most beautiful and lesser-known places in the Italian capital? Get ready for a journey into the past, where we'll explore Christian Rome and its millenary history.
Our tour begins with a brief introduction to the Appian Way, one of the oldest and most significant Roman roads in history. It was built in 312 BC and connected Rome to Brindisi, in southeastern Italy. This road was not only crucial for trade and military transport, it also had a profound historical and religious importance.
Next, we'll enter the catacombs of San Sebastian, a place of great importance for the history of Christianity in Rome. Did you know that they are one of the most important in the city? Once inside, we'll guide you through the subway galleries, sharing stories and details about life and death in ancient Rome.
During the 1-hour visit to the catacombs, we'll learn the story of their origin and development, as well as the life and martyrdom of St. Sebastian, a saint highly revered in the Christian tradition. We'll explore the crypts and look at the frescoes that decorate the walls of the catacombs, learning about how burials and religious ceremonies were carried out in those times.
Then, 2 hours later, we'll end our tour after a journey into the Christian past of the Eternal City.
